I have been notified today by Telford and Wrekin Council that road improvement works are due to take place on Avenue Road in August. On our return to school the road layout will therefore be different…
Work will involve:
- Extension of on road parking restrictions and relevant signage
- The addition of dropped kerbs and tactile paving
- Removal of pedestrian barriers with the installing of new pencil bollards
Telford and Wrekin have sent this rationale:
- to resolve parking issues in St Nicholas Park and around Avenue Rd area in response to resident and Cllr complaints
- to improve pedestrian access across Avenue Rd
- create an area directly in front of the school free of parked vehicles
- Removal of existing railings and installing the pencil bollards to act as a visual reminder while also allowing ped permeability and freedom of movement – this has worked well at other schools. The existing barriers are restricting space on the pavement and forcing pedestrians to cross in places where it is not safe to do so.
As always we ask that our parents and carers do not drive through Avenue Road for school drop off and pick up. We ask that local car parks are used or that ideally children walk to school where possible.
As a school in the Autumn we will continue our curriculum around safety as a pedestrian: Year 3 will complete pedestrian training, Year 4 Be Bright Be Seen workshops, Year 5 Bikeability and we will have a whole school assembly on safe travel as a pedestrian in the winter months.
