As a 7-11 Junior School we welcome a new cohort of Year 3 children at the beginning of each academic year. Historically we have enjoyed very close links with Newport Infant School and the vast majority of families choose to send their children here as we build upon the learning children have experienced in the Early Years and throughout Keystage 1. Often families of children in Year 2 who attend other schools consider joining us and have in the past participated in our Transition Programme.
To ensure a smooth transition we have, working alongside Newport Infant School, developed a Transition Programme which is designed to give children confidence as they move to a new school. In the Autumn Term Year 2 children visit us and experience assemblies and collective Worship at the Junior School. In November prospective families have the opportunity to visit school, meet members of staff and see children at work.
During the Spring Term the Transition Programme continues at NJS as Year 2 and Year 3 children work together with their new teachers and support staff. This is a 6-8 week unit of work which really helps the children settle as they begin to look forward to their new school.
To cement these new relationships we hold a day at Chetwynd Deer Park for Year 2 and 3 children and staff to complete a range of outdoor learning activities together.
As we move towards the end of the academic year children enjoy two full days at Newport Junior School with their new teacher and staff from both schools meet to share information which further supports the transition process. Also, as a celebration of of our joint achievements both schools enjoy “A Grand Day Out”-all the children enjoy from both schools have a day of fun activities.
These formal arrangements are underpinned by the very positive relationships that exist between both school communities: The PTA’s of both schools work closely together and the annual “Party in the Parks,” which celebrates our children’s musical prowess, continues to be very popular.
We hope this gives you an insight into the transition process between Year 2 and 3. If you wish to find out more or want to ask about your child joining us in other year groups please contact the school.
