Parental information for RSE (Relationships and Sex Education)

There are changes being made to the way we are teaching RSE (Relationship and Sexual Education) at Newport Junior School.

This is for two reasons, firstly their are new Government requirements which all schools have to implement from September 2026 and secondly we wanted to update the curriculum content of our RSE and make it appropriate to meet the needs of our children today.

We will be using a resource called Kapow Primary to deliver all our PSHE and our RSE lessons.

I have attached documents here for you to look at which will explain in greater detail the changes being made and to open a consultation period where parents can email in comments and feedback. These comments will help support our new RSE Policy to be completed in July 2026 in readiness for the Statutory changes being implemented from September 2026.

The main change to be noticed is that there are only two lessons which come under the heading of Sex Education, which are to be taught in Year 6. Parents maintain the right to withdraw children from these lessons.

Lessons which cover puberty and changes to the human body as we grow is covered under the Science Curriculum and there is no right to withdraw from these lessons.

A letter to parents explaining the changes, the steps we are taking and opening the consultation period.

A link to the Kapow Website- Parent’s Zone. This breaks down what is taught under the new curriculum and has a frequently asked questions section for parents.

Please take time to familiarise yourself with these changes and read the materials shared here.

Thank you,
