Physical Education at Newport Junior School
At Newport Junior School, we are committed to providing a high-quality Physical Education (PE) curriculum that develops children’s physical skills, confidence, teamwork and enjoyment of sport. Our PE curriculum follows the National Curriculum, with Get Set 4 PE used to support teachers with planning, progression and assessment, ensuring that children experience a broad and balanced range of sporting activities.
We use our School Sports Premium funding to enhance PE provision and increase opportunities for competitive sport. Through our involvement with the Telford and Wrekin School Sports Partnership (TWSSP), pupils are able to attend a wide range of sporting events and competitions, providing opportunities to represent the school, develop resilience and experience competition in a positive and supportive environment.
TWSSP also provides valuable professional development for staff. This includes additional PE training for Early Career Teachers (ECTs), training and support for less-confident members of staff, as well as access to new PE initiatives, resources and regular sports updates. This ensures that staff continue to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in delivering high-quality PE lessons.
Newport Junior School also works closely with local sports clubs and organisations. We provide opportunities for local groups to run sports and club days within school, allowing children to experience new activities and helping to promote participation in community sport beyond the school day.
We are particularly proud of the extensive range of free sports clubs offered by dedicated NJS staff every day. These clubs provide pupils with additional opportunities to be physically active, develop their sporting skills and discover activities that they may wish to pursue further. By removing financial barriers, we ensure that participation is accessible to all children. The commitment of our staff means that sport and physical activity are embedded within school life, extending opportunities beyond timetabled PE lessons and encouraging children to develop an active lifestyle.
The Outdoor and Adventurous Activity (OAA) element of our curriculum is enhanced through our investment in Cross Curricular Orienteering (CCO). This provides engaging opportunities for children to develop navigation, teamwork, problem-solving and physical skills, while also supporting learning in Literacy and Numeracy through interactive, cross-curricular activities.
OAA is further enriched through outward-bound residential experiences for Years 3, 4 and 5, where children develop independence, resilience, cooperation and confidence in challenging outdoor environments. Together, these opportunities ensure that PE at Newport Junior School contributes to the development of active, confident and well-rounded learners.
