I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and that your children have enjoyed a happy and relaxing break.

It has been fantastic to welcome everyone back to school today. The children have returned looking incredibly smart and have worked hard to make an excellent first impression on their new teachers.

A particularly warm welcome goes to our Year 3 pupils, as well as the many new children and families joining us across the school. We are delighted to have you as part of the NJS family and look forward to getting to know you over the coming year.

Please make sure you take the time to read our weekly newsletter, as it contains important information, key dates, and updates about everything happening across the school.

I am looking forward to a successful, positive, and exciting year ahead, working together with our wonderful children, families, and staff.

Wellbeing at NJS

Wellbeing – Newport CE Junior School

Wellbeing is really important to us at NJS. Click the link above to explore the wellbeing page on our website, where you can find out about everything we do to promote wellbeing and support everyone in our school family.

Meet the Teacher: MONDAY!

As advertised over the Summer we are hosting ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions on Monday 7th September.

Please make your way to your child’s classroom for either 3.30pm or 4pm for a short session with your child’s class teacher. (all classes will hold two sessions)

This is a great opportunity to see their classroom, meet their teacher and find out lots of useful information about the forthcoming school year.

Don’t worry if you can’t attend… teachers will send out their presentation by email that afternoon.

Parent Pay

Please can we urge all families to ensure they have activated their Parent Pay accounts.  This is how you will need to pay for meals, trips, residentials and book clubs.

Any issues please contact the office: njs.admin@taw.org.uk

Pre Loved Uniform

Simply register using the weblink above.  If you see an item you would like please ‘send a message’ stating your child’s full name and class.  The school office will then send this item home with your child on the next school day.  Easy!

We hope this helps families to access pre loved uniform with ease.

Please remember throughout the year we appreciate donations of pre loved uniform to NJS: please bring it to the school office (green jumpers, logo polo shirts, grey items, fleeces… all appreciated!)

Free School Meals: NEW Eligibility Criteria

Your child, or children, may qualify for Free School Meals if you meet the following criteria:

  • you or your partner (if you have one) have a child for whom you receive Child Benefit and who is attending a school or college in Telford and Wrekin,

and you get any of the following:

  • Universal Credit and your household income is less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)*,
  • Income Support,
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance,
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance,
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190),
  • Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit),
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

Each school receives a weekly list showing the names of all children who are entitled to Free School Meals.

* Extended Eligibility Criteria from September 2026

From the start of the 2026/27 school year (September 2026), the Department for Education are extending the entitlement to free school meals to include all children from households in receipt of Universal Credit.  The £7,400 a year limit will no longer apply.  Applications can be made in advance of the new school year and we will check and notify parents / carers of entitlement.

Transitional Protection

Since 1 April 2018, all existing free school meals claimants have continued to receive free school meals whilst Universal Credit is rolled out. This applies regardless of any change in household circumstances, including if their earnings rise above the threshold during that time or if entitlement to one of the qualifying benefits ends. This is called Transitional Protection. Protections will remain in place until the end of the 2025/26 school year. At the end of the 2025/26 school year, all free school meal claims will be checked for eligibility, and those who do not meet the criteria will not be entitled to free school meals. From September 2026 when these protections end any entitlement will be based on income prior to September 2026 with income checked annually.  If during the year a household becomes entitled to one of the qualifying benefits then a new application can be made.

APPLICATIONS CAN BE MADE HERE: https://www.telford.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/school-meals/free-school-meals/

Pupil Mobile Phones…

National guidance for schools is clear that pupils must NOT access their mobile phone during the school day.

IF your child arrives at school with a mobile phone they are asked to place it in their class teachers box on the playground when they are met at 8.45am.

Your child’s phone is stored in school at your own risk: we cannot be held responsible for loss or damage.

The phone will be returned to your child when they leave the school site and not before.

Thank you for your support.

NJS Staff Team

Our staff are superb and routinely go above and beyond to support the children in our school.  It’s important we look after them so they can do their very best for the pupils.

As a school we have agreed, in discussion with them, for 2026-2027 we will do 50 Things to Support their wellbeing: The 50 things we will do to promote staff wellbeing 26.27

We ask that our families are also supportive of our staff: working with them to ensure the very best school provision for our children.  Please see our Parent Code of Conduct: Parent-Code-of-Conduct

As always we thank you for your support; working together successfully our children will achieve amazing things.
