4 years ago Posted on 17th Nov 2022 by Elliot Lawson Year 3 DT Day (23rd) – Bring a bottle Dear year 3 parents and guardians As part of our design and technology focus this term, we have been evaluating torches. With a great link to the electricity topic from last half term, we are planning to spend a day building torches focussing on building circuits and designing a sturdy case. We have been able to secure funding for all children to make a circuit within school. However, we need your help with the case. After thorough evaluation, we have found the best item to use as a case is a 500 ml plastic bottle such as a coke bottle etc. We would like all children to bring in a 500 ml plastic bottle in for Wednesday 23rd November. This bottle needs to be sturdy so we would advise a bottle designed for carbonated drinks rather than a flimsy water bottle. The bottle needs to be empty and in school by Wednesday 23rd November. Children may bring them in from Monday 21st November and keep them in their tray. To ensure all pupils can finish the day with their very own torch that they can bring home, we need all pupils to bring in a plastic bottle. We have finally found the opportunity to lead our Autumn term Design and Technology unit focussing around the design and manufacturing of drag racing buggies. With a slightly later start we had a great job squeezing as much in as we could! The entire of year 5 have been amazing! We started by evaluating previous drag racing vehicles and looked how forces affect them, with a great link to our previous forces module in science, using this knowledge to develop a design brief. We then worked as a group to create a team design with a focus on what our groups project will have specifically. Following this we looked back at our knowledge around circuits to give our buggies power and created a simple circuit. Following this we needed to build up the chassis of our buggy, with a strong focus on how to ensure it continues to meet our design brief. And finally today, we started to focus on an aesthetic touch of our buggies, ensuring they followed the theme our team had suggested. Unfortunately, that was all we had time for, so tomorrow afternoon we will be joining together again to have the exciting drag races, giving the children the opportunity to evaluate their design and build process. Take a look at the photos from today and keep your eyes open for some exciting races tomorrow. It was a brilliant day and as DT co-ordinator it was amazing to see the skills, discussion and use of vocabulary. As well as a bucket load of team work!!! Well done year 5!

You may wish to complete additional work using the links provided on the school website or suggestions on the NJS Home Learning information page in the Home Learning books. If you feel like the activities provided are too challenging or too much for your child, please adapt the work or amount that you do. There is no obligation to complete every activity set each day.
