Year 3 Homework

Wednesday 9th September 2026

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 3,

Homework

The vision behind our approach to homework is enabling families to have the time to engage meaningfully in homework and to support teacher workload. We will be setting a ‘half termly’ project and some weekly activities, all of which are not compulsory, but are rewarded through the school’s reward schemes (house points /Headteacher awards, recognising effort during celebration assemblies etc, posting to school website). Homework will usually run from Friday to Wednesday.

Maths Homework

If you wish to use the homework book for recording we would encourage this, and this will be looked at at the end of the half term period by a member of the Year 3 Team. We hope that as a family you will be able to engage in the learning focus through games, challenges, quizzes and online activity.  We hope that the learning focuses will help to embed key mathematical skills in your child.Times Tables Rockstars will continue to run with occasional challenges set by your teacher. This will be checked from time to time by your child’s class teacher, to assess participation and progress. Children also have access to Numbots, with the same logon, which will develop addition bonds. Children will be rewarded with house points for effort, potentially Head teacher awards, recognition in class and across the school.

Spellings

In Year 3, children will receive weekly spellings via the school website and a weekly spellings sheet to stick in their homework books, which they can complete for house points, if they bring it in weekly to show us. If children do not bring in their book until the end of each half term, please be aware that we will not be marking these in detail, due to the amount of work usually being enormous! Children should attempt and practice the relevant spellings for the week. We would like you to complete a range of spelling activities – complete spelling quizzes, spelling Menu games/activities (handout to follow) or get them to produce pieces of extended writing or description, using the spelling words.  Spellings will be taught as part of weekly English lessons and included in work set. We hope that this approach will ensure that the spellings are consistently spelt with accuracy by your child.

Reading

We expect children to read at least three times a week at home.  We encourage children to read a range of genres and to read aloud to practise skills of confidence, fluency and expression.  Please record reading in your child’s reading diary and this will be checked every week by school staff.  Reading diaries and reading books must be in school everyday.

Foundation Project Homework

There may be other tasks that a year group may ask to be completed during a half term: it could be something related to the topic being covered.  This will be communicated at the start of a half term with a completion date. Again, this is not compulsory, but children will be rewarded using the school’s reward systems and receive recognition for their efforts in class and occasionally assemblies.
