5OP Writing!

For 7 weeks, year 5 have been looking at two genres within English. Both of these genres were based around ‘The Hound of the Baskerville’ a classic Sherlock Holmes story. The children have enjoyed reading some of the original text alongside a graphic novel version. The first genre, a cliff hanger narrative, produced the absolute best writing we have seen since the start of the year. Yesterday, the children were faced with a new genre – a formal event report. This is a tricky concept due to wanting to ‘tell the story’. It takes a different style of writing… all I can say is WOW! The children completed some in pairs, with really in depth discussions and they finished the piece independently. The reports I read were absolutely fantastic. I’ve attached some examples below…

Year 5 Lichfield Trip!

Good morning everyone,

Next Monday (12.06.23), we will be heading to Lichfield Cathedral! Below you will find a few reminders about the trip taking place…

  1. Children will need to be at school for 8:15am for a prompt departure at 8:30am.
  2. Children will need to bring a packed lunch (FSM children will have lunch provided).
  3. With the warmer weather occurring, children will need to bring sufficient amounts of water. They may also wish to bring a hat (if we have lunch outside) and sun cream.
  4. We will be leaving at approximately 2:30pm and will be hopefully back at NJS for 3:30pm. We will bring the children inside and then dismiss them on the big yard (as normal). Please look for any messages on the school Facebook page with more accurate timings.
  5. As we are travelling further, could we ask that parents provide children with any anti-sickness medication they may need. Any that need taking before the return journey will be handed to their group leader, who will ensure they have the tablet etc at the correct time. Please place any medication in a clearly named box/envelope.

We are really looking forward to this trip! It will be a brilliant comparison to our recent trip to the Mosque.

Many thanks,

Mrs Ollerenshaw

5N Messy Maths Day

The children thoroughly enjoyed the messy maths activities this afternoon! We have looked at a variety of different angles on the tables, estimated and measured the angles, drawn angles on the playground and played an interactive angle estimation game on the NRICH website.

5N Guided Reading

This morning, the children planned an informative presentation to persuade people to visit the Great Barrier Reef. They presented these to the whole class at the end of the day. Some fantastic art, computing and writing skills were displayed by the children, who thoroughly enjoyed the project!

Carnival Help from ALL parents!!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As part of this year’s carnival, we are celebrating local heroes and keyworkers. Please may we request any photos of your parents in their work uniforms to use for our display as part of this year’s carnival?

Any parents who are: police officers, fire fighters, doctors, nurses, refuse collectors, teachers, cleaners, caretakers, carpenters, plumbers etc. These will be much appreciated.

Please send your photos directly to Mrs Jukes. The contact e-mail is natalie.jukes@taw.org.uk.

If we could have these photos by Thursday at the latest, this will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you Mrs Jukes

Year 5 Swimming / 5N PE

5OP – Beech’s Base! 05.06.23

Good afternoon everyone from 5OP!

We hope that you have all had a wonderful half term!

Just a quick reminder about Beech’s Base tomorrow afternoon. You will need to bring your Beech’s base kit as normal – be mindful of the weather and old clothes will be better (incase you get muddy).

See you all tomorrow,

Mrs Ollerenshaw x
