MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY!

Good morning everyone,

This week I thought I would talk about one of the best things we can do for our minds… SLEEP! There is a close connection between sleep and your mental health. If you’re having difficulty sleeping, this can make coping with daily life hard, and if you’re struggling with your mental health, you may find you can’t sleep.

Lots of people struggle with sleep problems, but there are things you can do to help improve your sleep and reduce restless nights. You can try many things to help improve your sleep, but remember, different things work for different people. A few tips I recommend are:

  1. Try to establish a wind-down routine. This is something you may do to relax before you go to sleep. For example: Reading a book!
  2. Try to avoid going on devices (phones, games consoles, ipads, computers etc) for at least 30 minutes to an hour before you try to go to sleep.

Small simple changes can make a big difference and the better quality sleep, the better we feel.

Have a lovely week,

MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY!

Happy Monday NJS!

This week I am going to share some ideas for meditation!

What is meditation?

Meditation is when you focus your mind to help you relax and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. It is a tool you can use anytime you would like to feel calmer, less stressed or simply as a daily activity to maintain a good quality of mind.

Meditation is not about turning off your thoughts or stopping your feelings – it’s about observing them without judgement, from a bigger perspective. Learning to meditate is the same as learning any other sport or skill – it can take some time and practice to get better at it, but it is definitely a skill worth mastering. It is a great way to be kinder to ourselves, and also helps us be kind to others.

Why meditate?

  1. It is proven to reduce stress!
  2. It helps us feel happier.
  3. Meditation helps us relax which can help improve sleep.

Below is a guided mediation for children. We often do this at school with simple music… 5OP often listen to piano music to create a calm environment (we also listen to music from different decades so not always piano). You don’t need music either… simply a quiet place to sit and reflect.

Take care,

Mrs Ollerenshaw x

Lichfield Reminders!

Good afternoon,

We are all looking forward to our trip to Lichfield tomorrow! Just a few reminders:

  1. Please arrive at school for 8:15am. We are hoping for an 8:30am departure.
  2. Packed lunches with plenty of drinks!
  3. With the weather being set to be very hot, ensure children are appropriately dressed in school uniform. This should also include a hat and sun cream!
  4. Any children who require medication for travel sickness, please pass this to your teacher in an envelope or box clearly labelled with your name and class. Your class teacher will pass it onto your group leader.
  5. We are leaving at approximately 2:30pm and will be due back at NJS for 3:30pm. Please keep an eye on the school Facebook in case we are stuck in traffic etc.

When we arrive back at school, we will quickly go back into the classroom and then head out onto the big yard for dismissal (just like a normal end of day).

Many thanks,

The Year 5 team!

5OP Writing!

For 7 weeks, year 5 have been looking at two genres within English. Both of these genres were based around ‘The Hound of the Baskerville’ a classic Sherlock Holmes story. The children have enjoyed reading some of the original text alongside a graphic novel version. The first genre, a cliff hanger narrative, produced the absolute best writing we have seen since the start of the year. Yesterday, the children were faced with a new genre – a formal event report. This is a tricky concept due to wanting to ‘tell the story’. It takes a different style of writing… all I can say is WOW! The children completed some in pairs, with really in depth discussions and they finished the piece independently. The reports I read were absolutely fantastic. I’ve attached some examples below…

Year 5 Lichfield Trip!

Good morning everyone,

Next Monday (12.06.23), we will be heading to Lichfield Cathedral! Below you will find a few reminders about the trip taking place…

  1. Children will need to be at school for 8:15am for a prompt departure at 8:30am.
  2. Children will need to bring a packed lunch (FSM children will have lunch provided).
  3. With the warmer weather occurring, children will need to bring sufficient amounts of water. They may also wish to bring a hat (if we have lunch outside) and sun cream.
  4. We will be leaving at approximately 2:30pm and will be hopefully back at NJS for 3:30pm. We will bring the children inside and then dismiss them on the big yard (as normal). Please look for any messages on the school Facebook page with more accurate timings.
  5. As we are travelling further, could we ask that parents provide children with any anti-sickness medication they may need. Any that need taking before the return journey will be handed to their group leader, who will ensure they have the tablet etc at the correct time. Please place any medication in a clearly named box/envelope.

We are really looking forward to this trip! It will be a brilliant comparison to our recent trip to the Mosque.

Many thanks,

Mrs Ollerenshaw
