Free School Meal Provision

FREE SCHOOL MEAL PROVISION 🥪

From Monday 23 March we will be home delivering a free packed lunch to children who are eligible.

Lunches will be delivered Monday – Friday next week for children eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) with lunches delivered directly to homes.

Please note that this service is only for those who meet the Free School Meal financial eligibility criteria and not all Key Stage 1 pupils.

We will also continue to cater for the children of key workers at school next week.

They will get a packed lunch, ensuring those children who need a meal continue to receive one. We couldn’t have done this without the generosity of a number of local head-teachers who have agreed for their schools to be distribution points and Council staff, including many whose normal place of work has been closed, working together to pack, transport and deliver lunches.

The first of the 5,500 lunches will be delivered around midday on Monday and a member of the team will simply knock or ring a door bell to let the family know the food has arrived.

This home delivery service is a temporary emergency provision to support families ahead of the National Voucher scheme due to be rolled out across the country.

Unfortunately a delivery time cannot be guaranteed but if you haven’t received your parcel by 2pm please call 01952 383858

The following schools/providers have decided to make alternative arrangements for their pupils and are therefore not included in the Council’s delivery scheme please speak to the school directly:
• Bridge School
• Kickstart
• Linden Centre
• Muxton Primary School
• Newport Girls’ High School Academy
• Redhill Primary Academy

If you are not currently in receipt of free school meals but are worried your current financial situation may change in the coming weeks, this link gives more information about how to apply for free school meals:

#StayHomeSaveLives

Dear Parents and Carers

We hope you are all keeping well.

Gavin Williamson the Education Secretary has said: ‘You should only send your child to school on Monday if you have to, because your work is critical to our COVID-19 response.  If you are able to keep your child at home, you should.  #StayHomeSaveLives’

If your job is part of the critical team supporting the COVID-19 response we appreciate everything you are doing and want to support you.  If you have the privilege of being able to keep your child at home and safe please can we ask you follow the government guidelines and do so.

Please can I also remind you that if you or a member of the household has a high temperature or new cough you are expected to isolate for 14 days.

Please help to keep NJS vulnerable staff, children and their families safe.  As always we appreciate the support of our school family.

Key worker Provision

If your keyworker form was returned on Friday then this information applies to you. If we did not have your form we have not made provision for your child.

Please can I firstly remind you of the DFE advice that if you can find alternative care this is the preference in the interests of everyone’s health.

Children are to be brought in the front security gate each morning by a parent or carer at 8.50am.  There will be a staff member on the path checking details on the form and your child will be taken from you there to go straight into school to hand wash.

Children can be collected at 3.30pm from the main yard.

Please note;

* Children should thoroughly wash their hands before leaving home.

* Children must wash their hands on arrival at school and throughout the day.

* Children must wear a school jumper but the rest of their clothing can be comfortable.  Please also bring a change of clothing as many activities will be completed outside.  Children will need a coat.

* We expect children to come to school each day in clean, freshly washed clothing to help with hygiene.

* If we have any concerns about the health of any children we will contact you immediately to collect them.

* Please respect the rules of isolation; if any of your household have a persistent cough or high temperature you should all isolate for 14 days.

* If you, or a member of the household, present with symptoms during the school day we expect you to collect your child immediately in the interests of everyone’s health.

* Your child can bring a packed lunch or have a school meal (the menu may vary from the usual).  Free school meal children will be provided with a meal.

* We expect social distancing to be enforced when your child is not in school.

Thank you for your support.

Just…thank you xx

Staff were very emotional today closing our gates.  We adore NJS and our school family and this is tough for everyone.  Please can I thank the amazing NJS team again for everything they do.

Thank you to all of the parents and carers who have been supportive at this time; we can’t thank you enough for the wonderful emails and messages (even though you keep making us cry!).

NJS is a very special place and we’ll come back stronger than ever.

Cheer up with Colour!

Cheer up with colour!

Children and staff at Newport Junior School wore bright additions to their uniform today to raise morale and keep everyone smiling during these worrying times. Those who felt they were able brought a food donation as payment for their mufti additions, which will be given to support vulnerable families. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of NJS families, especially when surrounded by news of supermarkets being emptied and people desperate to fill their own cupboards. We are so proud of our wonderful children for their positivity and care for each other and our community during this time.
