MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY!
Happy Monday NJS!
This week I am going to share some ideas for meditation!
What is meditation?
Meditation is when you focus your mind to help you relax and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. It is a tool you can use anytime you would like to feel calmer, less stressed or simply as a daily activity to maintain a good quality of mind.
Meditation is not about turning off your thoughts or stopping your feelings – it’s about observing them without judgement, from a bigger perspective. Learning to meditate is the same as learning any other sport or skill – it can take some time and practice to get better at it, but it is definitely a skill worth mastering. It is a great way to be kinder to ourselves, and also helps us be kind to others.
Why meditate?
- It is proven to reduce stress!
- It helps us feel happier.
- Meditation helps us relax which can help improve sleep.
Below is a guided mediation for children. We often do this at school with simple music… 5OP often listen to piano music to create a calm environment (we also listen to music from different decades so not always piano). You don’t need music either… simply a quiet place to sit and reflect.
Take care,
Mrs Ollerenshaw x

Carnival Help from ALL parents!!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As part of this year’s carnival, we are celebrating local heroes and keyworkers. Please may we request any photos of your parents in their work uniforms to use for our display as part of this year’s carnival?
Any parents who are: police officers, fire fighters, doctors, nurses, refuse collectors, teachers, cleaners, caretakers, carpenters, plumbers etc. These will be much appreciated.
Please send your photos directly to Mrs Jukes. The contact e-mail is natalie.jukes@taw.org.uk.
If we could have these photos by Thursday at the latest, this will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you Mrs Jukes
Messy Maths Day
A huge thank you to the staff for their support with Messy Maths Day at NJS. The aim of today was to show children that the maths we learn in school has real-life, practical use outside of the classroom.
Yr 3 spent time looking at position, directions and shape out on the school field. They also spent time looking at coins and how to give change correctly.
Yr 4 spent the morning looking at budgeting in finance. How did they choose to spend their £1,000?
Yr 5 got to draw on the tables! Lines were used to create intersecting angles which children then measured, as well as looking at angles around school.
Yr 6 worked with Mr Yates – a local accountant – who introduced the children to the concept of profit and loss. A farming scenario allowed children to see how money can be made through a process including taxes and investments.
Hopefully the children enjoyed the day and realised that Maths is all around them in life. Please keep an eye on your year groups’ website area to see individual photos from today.
MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY!
Good morning everyone,
I hope that you have had a wonderful half term! This week is one of my favourite activities to do during a busy week at school. During the summer, we often pop outside to complete the grounding technique you will find below!
Simply go for a walk or even find a quiet spot to lie down and follow the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 steps!
Have a lovely week,
Mrs Ollerenshaw x
MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY!
Good morning,
This week you will find a simple breathing activity. Sometimes when we feel a range of emotions, a quick breathing exercise can help us. Following the picture below, you can complete the exercise anywhere and anytime. Have a go and see how it makes you feel!
Have a lovely week,
Mrs Ollerenshaw x
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Dear Parents / Carers,
During this next half term children will be taught the relevant knowledge from our RSE Curriculum appropriate for their year group.
Attached here for you to read is a joint letter from Mrs Moody and Mrs Pierce (Newport Infant School). Our approach to RSE is a common approach across both schools and the knowledge we teach the children builds upon prior knowledge.
There is also a presentation for you to read about the content of our RSE Curriculum, a sample of worksheets the children will use in each year group and a bank of appropriate vocabulary the children will meet in their lessons. We use a resource which has been used widely across many schools in Shropshire called ‘Respect Yourself.’
There is the right to withdraw your child from some elements of RSE (but not from the science curriculum). The form to complete, should you wish to do so, is also included here. If you wish to discuss matters then please approach the class teacher or myself to ask any further questions you might have and we can hopefully answer them for you.
Thank you,
Mr Rotherham
Year 3 visit a Sikh Gurdwara.
Year 3 have had a wonderful visit to a Gurdwara to learn more about the Sikh faith. They had an amazing time as these photographs show!
